WhatsApp Business Marketing: The India Playbook (2026)

What is WhatsApp marketing for business?

WhatsApp marketing is the use of WhatsApp Business or the WhatsApp Business Platform to sell, support and retain customers through direct messaging. For Indian businesses it typically covers catalogue sharing, order confirmations, broadcast offers, appointment reminders and post-sale support — all inside the app customers already use daily.

On scale: Meta's own most recent public statement puts WhatsApp's India user base at more than 500 million — a figure it gave in December 2024 and has not updated since. Higher numbers circulating online are third-party estimates, so cite Meta's figure and the date attached to it rather than the bigger ones.

Why is WhatsApp the highest-converting channel for Indian SMBs?

Because it removes every step between interest and purchase.

A customer sees a Reel, taps through, asks a price on WhatsApp, receives a catalogue link, pays by UPI and gets a delivery update — without downloading an app, creating an account or entering a card. No other channel in India compresses the funnel that tightly.

It also has a structural advantage: messages land in the same inbox as family and friends. That earns attention email cannot buy — and it is exactly why over-messaging is punished so quickly.

What is the difference between WhatsApp Business App and WhatsApp Business Platform?

This is the first decision to get right, and most guides skip it.

WhatsApp Business AppWhatsApp Business Platform (API)

CostFreePaid, priced per conversation
DevicesLimited linked devicesUnlimited agents via a provider
AutomationBasic greeting and away messagesFull automation, chatbots, CRM sync
BroadcastsLimited, contact-list dependentTemplate messages at scale

Rule of thumb: if you are answering fewer than roughly 50 conversations a day and one person handles them, the free app is enough. Beyond that, the friction of manual handling costs more than the API does.

One thing worth knowing before you budget: since 1 July 2025 the Business Platform bills per delivered template message, priced by message category (marketing, utility, authentication), destination country and monthly volume — customer-initiated messages are free. Further changes to service and utility message pricing are scheduled through 2026. Rates move often enough that any number quoted in a blog post is wrong within a quarter, so check Meta's official WhatsApp pricing documentation before you commit to a plan.

How do you build a WhatsApp contact list legally and ethically?

You cannot buy a list. Numbers scraped or purchased will get your account reported and eventually blocked, and in India unsolicited commercial messaging exposes you to complaints under telecom and consumer protection rules.

Build the list with explicit opt-in:

  1. Click-to-WhatsApp entry points — Instagram bio link, ads, website chat button, Google Business Profile.
  2. Value exchange at checkout — "Get your order updates on WhatsApp?" with a checkbox that is not pre-ticked.
  3. Offline QR codes — at the counter, on packaging, on the bill.
  4. Lead magnets — a price list, size guide or template delivered on WhatsApp in exchange for a number.

Record the source and timestamp of every opt-in. If a complaint ever arrives, that log is your defence.

What should you actually send on WhatsApp?

Five message types cover almost every SMB use case.

1. Transactional messages

Order confirmations, payment receipts, shipping updates, appointment reminders. Highest open rates, zero annoyance, and they train customers to keep your number unblocked.

2. Catalogue and product messages

Send a catalogue link rather than fifteen images. Faster for the customer, cheaper on data, easier to update.

3. Broadcast offers

Sale announcements, new stock, festival offers. Use sparingly — this is the category that gets businesses blocked.

4. Re-engagement messages

"You bought a 3-month supply in March — running low?" Personalised, timed to the purchase cycle, and consistently the highest ROI message a retailer can send.

5. Support and feedback

Post-delivery check-ins and review requests. Cheap to send, and they surface problems before they become public reviews.

How often should you message customers on WhatsApp?

Promotional broadcasts: no more than 2–4 per month. Transactional messages: as many as the transaction genuinely requires.

WhatsApp is a permission channel with a hard consequence — the block button. Email fatigue produces silence; WhatsApp fatigue produces permanent loss of the contact. Treat every broadcast as a withdrawal from a limited account of goodwill.

How do you write a WhatsApp message that gets a reply?

  • Lead with the specific. "Your size 8 is back in stock" beats "New arrivals are here!"
  • Keep it under 60 words. WhatsApp is read one-handed.
  • One ask per message. Two CTAs means neither gets done.
  • Use the name. Personalisation is expected here, not impressive.
  • Give an exit. A visible opt-out reduces blocks and reports far more than it reduces list size.
  • Skip the emoji wall. Two, maximum.

Should you use broadcast lists, groups or channels?

Different tools, frequently confused:

  • Broadcast lists send one message to many recipients privately. Replies come to you individually. Best for offers and updates.
  • Groups let members see and message each other. Useful for cohorts, communities and classes — chaotic for retail promotions.
  • Channels are one-to-many, follower-based and public. Good for announcements, weak for conversion, since you cannot see who is listening.

For most businesses: broadcast for selling, groups only for genuine communities, channels for brand presence.

How do you measure WhatsApp marketing performance?

Track four numbers:

  1. Delivery and read rate — is the message landing?
  2. Reply rate — is it worth replying to?
  3. Block and opt-out rate — the single most important health metric; if it rises, cut frequency immediately.
  4. Conversation-to-order rate — the only number that maps to revenue.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhatsApp marketing legal in India? Yes, when recipients have opted in. Sending unsolicited promotional messages to purchased or scraped numbers risks account blocking and regulatory complaints. Keep a timestamped opt-in record for every contact.

How many people can I send a WhatsApp broadcast to? The free Business App limits each broadcast list, and recipients must have your number saved to receive it. The Business Platform removes that ceiling using approved message templates. Check the current limit in WhatsApp's official documentation before planning a campaign.

Can I schedule WhatsApp messages? Not natively in the free app. Scheduling requires the Business Platform through a provider, or a scheduling tool that connects to it.

What is the difference between a WhatsApp Status and a broadcast? Status is passive — contacts choose to view it. A broadcast lands directly in the chat list. Status is lower risk; broadcast is higher impact.

Will WhatsApp block my business account? Only if enough recipients block or report you. Frequency discipline and clean opt-in are the two controls that matter.

Where the WhatsApp conversation actually starts

Worth being straight about this: ZocialOne does not publish to WhatsApp. What it does is run the channels that feed WhatsApp — Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest and Google Business — from one calendar, so the discovery half of the funnel keeps running while you handle the closing half in chat.
